Norfolk Beach Laws

Norfolk is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Virginia. From Ocean View to East Beach, residents and visitors alike flock to the shorelines to enjoy the sun, sand, and surf. But like any public space, there are rules and regulations that govern how these beaches can be used. In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at some of the laws that apply to Norfolk beaches.

Alcohol consumption: Drinking alcohol is not allowed on any public beaches in Norfolk. This includes beer, wine, and liquor. Violators can be fined and face other legal consequences.

Littering: Littering on the beach is not only unsightly, it can also harm wildlife and the environment. Visitors are required to properly dispose of all trash, including cigarette butts and other small items.

Bonfires: Bonfires are allowed on the beach in designated areas and only during certain times of the year. The Norfolk Fire Department must be notified in advance, and all fires must be extinguished before leaving the area.

Dogs: Dogs are allowed on Norfolk beaches, but they must be on a leash at all times. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets.

Beach driving: Driving on the beach is not permitted, except in certain circumstances, such as for emergency vehicles and authorized personnel.

Fishing: Fishing is allowed on Norfolk beaches, but only in designated areas. A valid fishing license is required.

Swimming: Visitors are allowed to swim in the designated swimming areas only. Swimming outside of these areas is prohibited.

Tents and umbrellas: Tents and large umbrellas are not allowed on the beach during peak hours, typically from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Smaller umbrellas are allowed.

It’s important for visitors to be aware of these rules and regulations when using Norfolk’s beaches. These laws help to ensure that everyone can enjoy these natural resources safely and responsibly.
